TALUQAN (SW) – Residents of Ishkamish in Takhar have warned against the likely fall of this district to the Taliban if swift military operation is not conducted.
A large number of internally displaced persons from Ishkamish have taken shelter in the provincial capital Taluqan. They said it has been two weeks since the security forces are based in the center of Ishkamish, but no operations are conducted against the insurgents.
Esmat Qurbani, member of the provincial council, said the growing presence of the Taliban is worrisome. He added the insurgents are aiming to overrun the district.
A well-placed source told Salam Watandar that the Taliban are planning to wage an assault on the district and there are fears about the likely fall of the district. He confirmed that the special forces are based in the district, but they are not confronting the Taliban.
Meanwhile, spokesman for the provincial governor, Jawad Hijri, clarified that the operation was halted due to the Eid, and soon a clean-up operation would be launched. Acknowledging the security concerns, he said enough security forces are stationed there to repulse the Taliban assault.
According to the sources, the Taliban have also gathered fighters from Kunduz and Baghlan provinces for the likely attack on Ishkamish. A number of residents said the insurgents have warned people against watching television, using mobile phone or women going to markets. Taliban have also torched TV antennas in the district.
A while ago, Taliban staged three attacks aimed at the district administrative compound and police headquarters, but failed.
